The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression
One hope I have when I think about working with children and families who come from diverse backgrounds is that I support their educational needs and provide them with an anti-biased learning environment and experience. I strive to accomplish this by ensuring the classroom reflects the children and families enrolled; ensuring learning experiences are valuable and teach developmentally appropriate skills that also support the lives of the children and families.
One goal I would like to set for the early childhood field related to the issues of diversity, equity, and social justice is to educate the teachers. Educate them in how diversity, equity, and social justice impacts children and families, not just in the elementary and middle years of education, but also in preschool. Show children an unbiased education; talk with them about diversity, equity, and social justice on their level. Take the steps to positively change our world.
Thank you to all of my colleagues. I appreciate the support you have shown me through interactions here on my blog and on our discussion pages. Best of luck to you on your education and life journeys.

Hi Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! The education of teachers is very important in the field of early childhood education. It is important to always be collaborative with colleagues to ensure children's needs are properly taken care of. Teaching kids about diversity at a young age is also a great idea.
Hello Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. I believe it is essential for educators to create a non-bias and culturally competent accepting classroom. Educators should help children understand the world from different cultural perspectives. I also believe it is critical to a child's development and education, for educators to build joint relationships with the families of students especially from diverse backgrounds. In teaching children from a young age about cultural perspectives, these children learn to create confident self-identities and feel a sense of belonging.
