Dream Research Project

If I possessed the means and the knowledge I would conduct research studies on brain development and challenging behavior.  I imagine these studies would positively impact children and families.  Learning about what in the brain, or how the brain is affected by challenging behaviors will help us to better understand and better handle challenging behavior.  There are so many questions regarding challenging behavior.  I would like to determine the answers to some, if not all of those questions.

How To Help Your Child During a Meltdown or Tantrum - FamilyEducation

These studies would be longitudinal, covering at least one year.  They would involve children of all age groups beginning at the age of 2-years and continuing through the age of 14-years.  The studies would include testing children for developmental delays and disabilities as needed.  All resources available to children and families would be utilized.  The studies would be all-encompassing.  The vast age range is due to challenging behaviors occurring at different stages of development.

The studies would include parent questionnaires at every stage of evaluation.  The evaluation would begin upon entry into the study and every three months through one year.  At the completion of the first year it would be optional to continue in the program.  Evaluations would then decrease to once every six months for two years.  Brain studies would be conducted at the entrance into the research project and at six-month intervals thereafter.  Children will be observed in their natural environments either at school with parent permission, at home, or both.  The behavior of the children will be assessed through observation, parent questionnaires, teacher questionnaires, and child questionnaires.  Developmental assessments will also be conducted.

The Best Tantrum Tricks | Parents

Parents/ guardians would be required to complete an information session at which time they would be required to complete and sign an informed consent.  Participation would be voluntary and could be ended by either party at any time during the project.  Children would be asked to assent to the research if they were cognitively able to agree.

These are positive contributions as I imagine them:

developmental delays will be identified at an early age
other special needs will be identified at an early age
resources will be utilized by children and families (therapies of varying kinds)
we will discover the parts of the brain stirred by challenging behaviors
we will discover that parts of the brain can be rewired when working with challenging behaviors
we will correct challenging behaviors

  1. Rebecca,
Challenging behaviors are so hard to understand. Understanding how the brain works for challenging behaviors would be so enlightening for the entire world. It would also be beneficial if these things can be recognized or detected earlier in order to get help for these babies.
